| ECOMAR is working in partnership with and the World Wildlife Fund, The Nature Conservancy and the Protected Areas Conservation Trust to promote the Mesoamerican Coral Reef Watch Program in Belize. The MAR Coral Watch Program is an Early Warning Alert System for coral bleaching in the Western Caribbean region. Professional and recreational divers and snorkelers that visit the reefs of Belize regularly are the first to notice changes on the reef and are therefor the first step in the "Coral Bleaching Early Warning Alert System." When these "Reef Regulars" become volunteers with the Coral Watch Program and Adopt A Reef, they submit reports once a month for the sites they visit. These reports are monitored by ECOMAR and members of the Belize National Coral Reef Monitoring Network. When these reports indicate that there are partly bleached coral colonies, Coral Network members conduct scientific monitoring at more than 50 sites throughout Belize. |
