St. George's Caye Research Station & Field School

Founded in 2009, the St. George's Caye Research Station & Field School offers bunk style accommodations for visiting professors and student groups to study archaeology or marine biology.  Lectures and field classes are designed for each group's needs.

The Facility

Historical St. George's Caye is less than 10 miles from Belize City and one mile from the Belize Barrier Reef, making it an ideal location for getting to and from the mainland and reef ecosystems.

The St George's Caye Research Station & Field School offers comfortable accommodations for groups and offers bunk rooms or rooms with double beds, depending on your group size and specific requests.

Rooms are currently located in two buildings, the “White House” and the “Garber Lab” and includes linens and towels.   In the White House there are 3 bedrooms upstairs with two baths.  Each room has a dresser with four drawers. Most rooms also have nightstands.  All rooms have wall fans. There is no hot water or air conditioning.

Downstairs of the white house is the current dining/meeting area, kitchen, and one bedroom with bath.  In the Generator House there is a restroom and shower for use while on digs.

The Garber Cottage/Lab is a duplex that has private bath with ceiling fans.  Future buildings will be constructed near the Garber Cottage and will include:

  • Main building for dining and presentations with office downstairs
  • More dorms/cottages
  • Archaeology lab
  • Marine wet lab
  • Dive center with compressor and equipment
  • Sea turtle rehabilitation tanks
  • Library

Three meals are prepared daily and feature local and international dishes and are served buffet style.   The meals are so good many visitors ask for the recipes to take home!  As such we are planning the St. George's Caye Cookbook! Photos of the rooms and buildings are available on our Blog page for the St. George's Caye Research Station & Field School.

Programs

Current research programs conducted included the St. George's Caye Archaeology Project and the Manatee & Dolphin Surveys, and the Gallow's Point Turtle Project. We also offer student groups the opportunity to participate in the Coral Watch program so they can learn about the importance of the coral reefs and impacts of climate change.  Each can also work with ECOMAR and prepare a custom education package to suit their needs.
